Supermarket Job Descriptions

Associated Wholesale Grocers, through the cooperation of an occupation training group and legal counsel, has developed a series of sample job descriptions for your store.  These samples are not a replacement for the decisions that you, as employers, must make in determining “essential” functions, “reasonable” accommodation, and physical demands for each job.

They are, however, designed to help you do the following:

  • Think about the kind of functions that are significant to your business.
  • Determine the best-qualified candidates for positions.
  • Determine whether an employee who becomes ill or injured remains qualified to perform “essential” functions.
  • Evaluate whether possible accommodations are “reasonable”.

Just One Reason Why Accurate Job Descriptions Are Important

The Americans with Disabilities Act has a profound impact on employers’ decisions about hiring and retaining employees.  The ADA still permits employers to select the best qualified candidate for a position, and does not require employers to keep an employee in a job if that employee is not able, even with accommodation, to perform the “essential” functions of the job at an acceptable level.

The ADA does, however, require employers to determine who is the most qualified candidate for the job, without regard to whether that individual has a disability, as long as the individual can perform the “essential” functions of the job with or without “reasonable” accommodation.

This means that employers will have to look at each applicant or employee on a case-by-case basis, and avoid generalizations or blanket rules (e.g. “nobody with a lifting limitation can do this job”).  They will have to evaluate which functions of the job are “essential”, and whether potential accommodations are “reasonable”, as particular circumstances require.  Flexibility and consideration of each individual’s abilities are the keys to ADA compliance.
